What New Jersey does differently

  • The deadline is measured oddly. It is 30 days after the end of the month in which wages ceased, not 30 days after the last payroll and not the normal quarterly date. Stop paying wages on March 2 and the clock still runs from March 31.
  • Fifteen business days before, not after. Most states measure from your first payroll and let you catch up. New Jersey asks you to register at least 15 business days prior to commencing business, so a company that hires quickly is already behind on day one.
  • Fifteen business days before, not after. Almost every other state measures from your first sale or first payroll and lets you catch up. New Jersey wants the registration in before you trade, so a business that opens quickly is behind from the first day.
