Arizona Form 5000A, explained.

Form 5000A is the Arizona Resale Certificate, prescribed by the Department of Revenue under A.R.S. section 42-5022 to document purchases of tangible personal property for resale. The purchaser fills it out completely and furnishes it to the vendor, who retains it. Wholesalers need a TPT license or another state's sales tax license behind it.

State fee. $0. The certificate is a form, not a filing. The TPT license behind it has its own registration, covered on the Arizona sales tax registration page.

What the state asks for

  • The purchaser's name, address, and TPT license or other state's sales tax license number
  • The validity period, with specific dates the form requires
  • A description of the property purchased for resale
  • The exempt-purchaser basis instead of a license, for the narrow categories the form lists

How long it takes

No state processing exists. The certificate works from the moment the completed form reaches the vendor, and the form's own warning is the one to respect: incomplete certificates are not considered accepted in good faith.

What we do

We confirm the license behind the claim, prepare the 5000A with the right period and property description, and deliver it ready for the vendor's file. Whether a purchase qualifies as resale is your CPA's call; the paperwork being complete and current is ours.

What is Arizona Form 5000A?

The Arizona Resale Certificate, the Department of Revenue's prescribed form for documenting purchases of tangible personal property for resale in the ordinary course of business. The purchaser completes it and gives it to the vendor; nothing is filed with the state.

How long is a Form 5000A valid?

For the period written on it. The form encourages not exceeding 12 months, and allows a vendor to accept it in good faith for up to 48 months only when the vendor documents that the TPT license is valid for each calendar year covered. There is also a single transaction option.

Do I need a TPT license to use Form 5000A?

Wholesalers must hold a transaction privilege tax license or another state's sales tax license, per the form itself. The form lists narrow exceptions, including the United States government, unlicensed Arizona school districts, and certain nonprofit categories. If you need the TPT license, that is the sales tax registration service.

What happens if the certificate is incomplete?

The form says it plainly: incomplete certificates are not considered to be accepted in good faith. An incomplete 5000A leaves the vendor exposed on the tax, which is why suppliers bounce them back, and why we prepare them complete the first time.
