Missouri Form 2643, explained.
Form 2643 is the Missouri Tax Registration Application, the Department of Revenue form that opens a sales or use tax license, an employer withholding account, and corporate income or franchise tax registration in one filing. It registers Department of Revenue accounts only; Missouri unemployment insurance registers separately with the Division of Employment Security.
Who you are dealing with
Missouri Department of Revenue
- Handles:
- Sales and use tax, employer withholding, and corporate tax registration. The unemployment account is the Division of Employment Security's, opened through UInteract.
- System:
- MyTax Missouri, or paper Form 2643
- Form:
- Form 2643, Missouri Tax Registration Application, or online registration at dor.mo.gov/register-business
State fee. $0 for the registration itself. Form 2643 carries no filing fee line. A sales tax license requires a bond in some cases, which the application works out.
What the state asks for
- Social security number, address, and birthdate of each owner, officer, partner, or member
- The FEIN, and the charter or certificate of authority number from the Secretary of State
- Estimated monthly sales, which sets the sales tax filing frequency
- Estimated monthly wages, which sets the withholding filing frequency
- Previous owner details when the business was purchased
How long it takes
Missouri publishes no processing time for the registration, on the form, in its instructions, or on the registration requirements page. We file online through MyTax Missouri and track the account numbers as they issue.
What we do
We prepare the registration, file it online, and hand you the license and account numbers with the filing frequencies the state assigned. The unemployment account is filed separately with the Division of Employment Security so payroll can actually run. You keep the client. We never email them.
What is Missouri Form 2643?
The Missouri Tax Registration Application: one Department of Revenue form covering the sales or use tax license, the employer withholding account, and corporate income or franchise tax registration. The online route at dor.mo.gov/register-business files the same registration without the paper.
Does Form 2643 register Missouri unemployment tax?
No. The form's own sections cover sales and use tax, withholding, and corporate tax, and none of its 37 instruction items registers unemployment insurance. That account belongs to the Division of Employment Security and opens through UInteract, which is why a complete Missouri payroll setup is two registrations, not one.
What does Form 2643 cost?
Nothing. The form has no filing fee line. Some sales tax licenses require a bond, which is money the state holds, not a charge, and the application determines whether one applies.
Is the Missouri tax ID the same as my EIN?
No. The EIN is federal, from the IRS, and Form 2643 asks for it. The registration issues Missouri's own account numbers on top: the sales tax license number and the withholding account number your filings and payroll system quote.
How do I cancel a Missouri registration later?
Each account closes with the agency that holds it: final returns and a closure with the Department of Revenue for sales and withholding, and the Division of Employment Security for unemployment. Our Missouri closure pages cover the sequence; closing is its own filing, not an unchecked box.
