Missouri · Payroll registration

Missouri payroll tax registration, done for you.

Every employer paying wages to an employee working in Missouri has to register. Form 2643, the Missouri Tax Registration Application, covers withholding alongside sales and use tax, and the permanent number it issues is not transferable, which matters if the business is ever sold.

When you have to register

Every employer paying wages to an employee working in Missouri must register. It is framed as a condition rather than a threshold, so there is no wage amount to wait for.

What comes next

Not applicable to a registration. For later: Missouri's trigger for closing includes an employer who indefinitely ceases to pay wages, not only one who closes or sells, and the closure is Form 5633 with Revenue plus a Request to Close Account in UInteract.

How long it takes

Missouri does not publish a turnaround we could confirm. Registering electronically through MyTax Missouri is the faster of the two routes and leaves a record, where the posted or faxed Form 2643 does not.

What we do

We work out exactly which accounts you need, prepare and submit each registration, and hand you the account numbers, rates, and deposit schedules your payroll system asks for. One flat price per account, and any state fee passed through at cost.

What makes Missouri harder than average

  • The registration number is permanent and not transferable. Missouri says so directly. If the business is sold, the buyer does not inherit it, which is the same trap Wisconsin sets with its seller's permit.
  • One application, several tax types, and one agency it does not reach. Form 2643 covers withholding, sales, use, and corporate income tax with Revenue. Unemployment is the Division of Employment Security and needs its own registration.
  • There is a separate form for transient employers. Form 2643T exists for employers who are not permanently located in Missouri. Using the standard 2643 when the transient form applies creates a registration that does not match the business.
  • Three ways to submit and only one leaves a record. MyTax Missouri online, post to the Jefferson City PO Box, or fax. If you use paper, keep your own copy, because there is no acknowledgement to rely on.

Questions and answers

When does Missouri require registration?

Whenever you pay wages to an employee working in Missouri. It is stated as a condition rather than a dollar threshold, so there is no amount to reach first.

Does one form cover everything?

Form 2643 covers withholding along with sales, use, and corporate income tax at the Department of Revenue. Unemployment insurance is separate, at the Division of Employment Security.

I bought a Missouri business. Can I use its registration number?

No. Missouri states the number is permanent and not transferable. The buyer registers in their own right.

What is Form 2643T?

The transient employer version of the registration application, for employers not permanently located in Missouri. If that describes you, it is the correct form rather than the standard 2643.

What do you need from me to start?

The legal name and FEIN, entity type, Missouri work locations, first payroll date, whether you are permanently located in Missouri, and whether the business was purchased from an existing employer.
