Missouri · Sales tax registration
Missouri sales tax registration, done for you.
Form 2643, the Missouri Tax Registration Application, covers sales and use tax alongside withholding and corporate income tax. The detail worth knowing before you file is that the registration number Missouri issues is permanent and not transferable, which matters the day the business is sold.
Who you are dealing with
Missouri Department of Revenue
- Handles:
- Sales and use tax, and employer withholding and corporate income tax on the same application
- System:
- MyTax Missouri
- Form:
- Form 2643, the Missouri Tax Registration Application. Filed electronically through MyTax Missouri, or posted to PO Box 357, Jefferson City MO 65105-0357, or faxed to 573-522-1722. Transient employers use Form 2643T
State fee. $0 to register. A bond may be required in some circumstances, which is money held rather than a fee. Our flat fee covers preparing and filing the application.
When you have to register
Register before making taxable sales in Missouri. The same application covers withholding if you are also hiring, which is worth doing together rather than twice.
What comes next
Not applicable to a registration. Worth knowing now: Missouri requires a final return even when there is no tax to report, and Form 5633 is per location rather than per business, so the address you register matters at the end as well as the start.
How long it takes
Missouri does not publish a turnaround we could confirm. MyTax Missouri is the faster route and leaves you a record, where the posted or faxed Form 2643 does not.
What we do
We work out exactly which accounts you need, prepare and submit each registration, and hand you the account numbers, rates, and deposit schedules your payroll system asks for. One flat price per account, and any state fee passed through at cost.
What makes Missouri harder than average
- The number is permanent and not transferable. Missouri says so directly. A buyer does not inherit your registration, which is the same trap Wisconsin sets with its seller's permit and the opposite of what most people assume in an asset sale.
- One application, several tax types, one agency it does not reach. Form 2643 covers sales, use, withholding, and corporate income tax at Revenue. Unemployment is the Division of Employment Security and is registered separately.
- There is a separate form for transient businesses. Form 2643T applies to those not permanently located in Missouri. Using the standard form when the transient one applies creates a registration that does not match reality.
- Registration is per location, and so is closure. Form 5633 asks for the physical address of the location being closed, so a multi-site business needs its registrations organised deliberately rather than accumulated.
Questions and answers
Can a buyer use my Missouri registration number?
No. Missouri states the number is permanent and not transferable. The buyer registers in their own right, and the seller still has closure obligations.
Does one form cover sales tax and payroll?
Form 2643 covers sales and use tax, employer withholding, and corporate income tax at the Department of Revenue. Unemployment insurance is separate at the Division of Employment Security.
What is Form 2643T?
The transient version, for businesses not permanently located in Missouri. If that describes you it is the correct form rather than the standard 2643.
Is there a fee?
No fee to register. A bond may be required in some circumstances, which is money held rather than a charge.
What do you need from me to start?
The legal name and FEIN, entity type, the physical Missouri addresses you will sell from, what you sell, the date taxable sales begin, and whether you are permanently located in Missouri.
