Indiana · Sales tax registration

Indiana sales tax registration, done for you.

Form BT-1, the Business Tax Application, opens an Indiana sales tax account alongside withholding if you need both. The reason to be deliberate about what you tick is that Indiana treats an unused account as an active one and sends bills for estimated taxes rather than reminders.

State fee. $0 to register. The cost in Indiana is on the other side: an account left open can attract bills for estimated taxes, which are real liabilities rather than notices.

When you have to register

Register before making taxable retail sales in Indiana. Sales tax here is a trust tax, money collected on the state's behalf, which is why Indiana escalates faster on it than states that treat a dormant account as an administrative loose end.

What comes next

Not applicable to a registration, and this is the reason to register narrowly. Indiana states that if the account is not closed on INTIME and no BC-100 is filed, the Department of Revenue may continue to send bills for estimated taxes.

How long it takes

Indiana does not publish a turnaround we could confirm. INTIME is the route that leaves you a record, where a paper application does not.

What we do

We work out exactly which accounts you need, prepare and submit each registration, and hand you the account numbers, rates, and deposit schedules your payroll system asks for. One flat price per account, and any state fee passed through at cost.

What makes Indiana harder than average

  • An unused account is not harmless here. Most states send a notice asking for a return. Indiana may assess estimated tax, which then has to be resolved by filing the actual returns rather than ignored.
  • One application covers several trust taxes. BT-1 can open sales tax and withholding together. Convenient if you need both, and a liability if you tick one speculatively.
  • Trust tax framing changes the tone. Sales tax you collect was never yours, and Indiana's guidance and enforcement reflect that. It is not a state to be casual with.
  • Do not mail and fax the same closure form later. Indiana says so explicitly for the BC-100, which suggests enough people have done it. Worth knowing the habit now.

Questions and answers

Should I register for extra Indiana tax types while I am there?

No. Indiana may send bills for estimated taxes on an account that is left open, so an unnecessary registration creates a real liability rather than an unused login.

Does BT-1 cover payroll withholding too?

It can. BT-1 covers Indiana business trust tax accounts, which includes sales tax and withholding. Unemployment insurance is separate at the Department of Workforce Development.

Is there a fee?

No fee to register. What costs money is leaving an account open after you stop using it.

How long does it take?

Indiana does not publish a turnaround we could verify with the agency. Commercial guides quote figures we have not confirmed, so we will not repeat them.

What do you need from me to start?

The legal name and FEIN, entity type, Indiana locations, what you sell, the date taxable sales begin, and whether you also need withholding.
