Georgia · Sales tax closure
Close a Georgia sales tax account.
Georgia gives you three ways to close a sales and use account and one condition on all of them. The Department of Revenue will not process the request from a taxpayer who is not compliant, which means every required return has to be on file first. Clear that and the account updates in about 48 hours.

State fee. $0. Georgia does not charge to close a sales and use account. It states directly that closing an account will not stop collections or the obligation to pay liabilities, so a balance follows you past the closure.
When you have to close
You close when you stop making taxable sales in Georgia. The effective date goes on the request and the letter, so pick a date your filings can actually support rather than the date you happen to be doing the paperwork.
Final returns come first
File the final state tax return and bring any outstanding returns current before the close request. Georgia gates the closure on compliance rather than accepting the request and chasing the returns afterwards, so filing first is not optional here.
How long it takes
Allow up to 48 hours for the account update once the request is submitted, which is one of the few genuinely published turnarounds in this work. The qualifier is that those 48 hours only begin once you are compliant, and becoming compliant is usually the longer job.
What we do
We confirm which accounts are open, file the final returns if they are still outstanding, submit the cancellation to each agency, and follow up until both are confirmed closed. You get the written confirmations. One flat price, and the state charges nothing to close.
What makes Georgia harder than average
- Compliance gates the closure. Georgia will not process a close request from a taxpayer who is not compliant, meaning every required return must be on file. A business that stopped filing when it stopped selling has to file its way current before anything can close, and that is the actual work.
- Closing the account does not close the debt. Georgia says plainly that closing an account will not stop collections or the obligation to pay liabilities. If the notice you are trying to stop is about an amount rather than a missing return, closing will not stop it.
- The letter has requirements. If you are not using the Georgia Tax Center, the written request needs to be on company letterhead, state the date you want the account closed, and carry the owner's signature. It goes to SalesTax.Business@dor.ga.gov.
- A representative needs a power of attorney already on file. The POA has to be lodged before the request will be processed, not submitted alongside it, which is a sequencing problem if your accountant is handling the closure.
- The GTC path is buried. Sales and Use Account, then see more, then Management, then Request to Close Account. It is not on the front screen and people give up before finding it.
Questions and answers
How fast does Georgia close a sales tax account?
Allow up to 48 hours for the account update after the request goes in. The important qualifier is that Georgia will not process the request unless every required return is already filed, so the real timeline depends on how far behind the account is.
Where is the close option in the Georgia Tax Center?
Log in, select Sales and Use Account, click see more, go to Management, and choose Request to Close Account. It is several layers down, which is why people assume it is not there.
Can I close by email instead?
Yes. Send a letter on company letterhead to SalesTax.Business@dor.ga.gov stating the date you want the account closed, signed by the owner. If a representative is sending it, a power of attorney has to already be on file with the department.
I closed the account and Georgia is still contacting me.
Check what the notice is about. Georgia states that closing an account does not stop collections or the obligation to pay liabilities, so a balance notice on a properly closed account is a payment matter rather than a closure matter.
What do you need from me to start?
The legal name and Georgia sales and use tax number, the effective closing date you want, a list of the returns you believe are outstanding, and whether a power of attorney is already on file if we are submitting on your behalf.
