Tennessee · Sales tax closure
Close a Tennessee sales tax account.
Tennessee handles this entirely inside TNTAP, and the option is not where you would look for it. It sits behind an Additional Actions link next to the account rather than in a settings menu, and the first thing it asks is whether you are closing every location or only some.

State fee. $0. Tennessee does not charge to close a sales and use tax account. Tax already due survives the closure.
When you have to close
You close when the business stops making taxable sales in Tennessee. TNTAP asks for the date closed and a closure reason, and where you have several locations it asks whether all of them are closing, which is a different action from closing the account entirely.
Final returns come first
Each business closing or ceasing to exist has to file final returns for any tax due, and the return should be marked as a final return where an indicator is available. On paper, tick the Final Return box on the last return you file. That marking is what tells the department to stop expecting the next one.
How long it takes
Tennessee does not publish a turnaround for the closure. Because it is submitted as a request inside TNTAP rather than processed instantly, we confirm the account shows as closed rather than treating the submission as the end.
What we do
We confirm which accounts are open, file the final returns if they are still outstanding, submit the cancellation to each agency, and follow up until both are confirmed closed. You get the written confirmations. One flat price, and the state charges nothing to close.
What makes Tennessee harder than average
- The close option hides behind Additional Actions. It is on the Summary tab, next to the account, rather than in an account settings area. People go looking in the wrong place and conclude TNTAP cannot do it.
- All locations or some is the first question, and it matters. Closing every location and closing the account are related but not identical, and a multi-location business shutting one shop should not answer yes without meaning it.
- Paper filers have to tick a box. If you file on paper, the Final Return box on the last return is what closes the account. A correct last return with the box untouched leaves the account expecting another one.
- Tennessee has no wage withholding, so this is often the only Revenue account you hold. That is convenient and it also means there is no second agency prompting you, so a dormant sales account can sit unnoticed. The unemployment account, if you had employees, is a different department entirely.
Questions and answers
Where is the close option in TNTAP?
On the Summary tab, click the Additional Actions link next to the account. It is not in a settings menu, which is why it is easy to miss. From there you answer whether you are closing all locations and give the date and reason.
I file on paper. How do I close?
Tick the Final Return box when you file the last return for the business. That indicator is what closes the account.
I am closing one shop but keeping another open.
Then do not answer yes to closing all locations. Closing a location and closing the account are different, and answering the first question carelessly ends the whole registration.
Does this affect my Tennessee unemployment account?
No. Tennessee has no wage withholding, so Revenue holds the sales account and the Department of Labor and Workforce Development holds the unemployment account. That one is closed on form LB-0792.
What do you need from me to start?
The legal name and Tennessee account number, the date closed, the closure reason, whether every location is closing, and the figures for the final period.
