Kentucky · Sales tax registration

Kentucky sales tax registration, done for you.

Kentucky is stricter about timing than most states: the Department of Revenue's own instructions require the registration application at least 30 days before you engage in activity that needs a sales and use tax account, with statutory penalties for missing it. The rate side is simple, a flat 6 percent with no local sales taxes, but the application is not: one form covers thirteen tax types and the sales section is gated by two dozen activity questions.

File 10A100: register for Kentucky sales tax

It goes to the agency named above, through the system listed beside it. We prepare it, file it, and send you the written confirmation.

State fee. $0. Kentucky publishes no fee for sales and use tax registration, and Form 10A100 and its instructions carry no payment line or remittance instruction of any kind.

Our fee. $180 per state, flat. State fees are passed through at cost.

When you have to register

Kentucky requires the application at least 30 days before engaging in an activity that requires a sales and use tax account under KRS 139.200 and 139.240, and its instructions state that missing the window is subject to penalties under KRS 131.180. For remote sellers, HB 487 requires registration once you have 200 or more sales into the state or $100,000 or more in gross receipts from sales into the state, measured on the previous or current calendar year.

What comes next

The exit is its own filing: Form 10A104, Update or Cancellation of Kentucky Tax Account(s), or a service request through MyTaxes, with the last date of activity. Worth knowing at the start because the same form warns that a corporation's income tax and LLET accounts cancel only with a final return, and a Kentucky-organized entity cannot file that final return before it is officially dissolved, so a clean exit in Kentucky is a sequence, not one request.

How long it takes

The 10A100 instructions say fully completed paper applications process within 5 to 10 business days barring seasonal workload, but the department's registration page currently warns that mailed, faxed, or emailed paper applications can take up to three weeks. No numeric turnaround is published for online registration; the department only says applying at mytaxes.ky.gov is faster. When the timing matters, online is the route.

What we do

We work out which accounts you need, submit each registration, and hand you the account numbers, rates, and deposit schedules your payroll system asks for. One flat price per state, and any state fee passed through at cost. You keep the client. We never email them.

Kentucky wants the application filed at least 30 days before taxable activity begins, so on a Kentucky order the start date you give us is the deadline we work backward from.

What makes Kentucky harder than average

  • The 30-day head start is a legal requirement, not advice. Most states say register before making sales; Kentucky's instructions require the application 30 days before the activity begins and name the penalty statute for missing it.
  • One application, thirteen tax types. Form 10A100 opens everything from employer withholding to the coal seller certificate, and its sales tax section only unlocks after roughly two dozen yes or no activity questions. That is why a Kentucky registration intake asks more than almost any other state's.
  • The state's own pages disagree about where to register. Sales and use tax moved to the MyTaxes portal on March 14, 2025, but the Kentucky One Stop Business Portal's state tax page still describes the old paper flow. Follow the wrong page and you are on a three-week paper track.
  • Linking an existing business in MyTaxes can take two mail weeks. Without a recently filed return, the portal mails a PIN letter, and the department says to allow up to 14 days for it to arrive.
  • Returns are online-only once you are in. Kentucky mandates online filing and payment for sales tax accounts as functionality becomes available, and the paper returns are deliberately not downloadable; a lost original means calling the division.

How Kentucky compares

If Kentucky is one of several states on the list, the order you register in changes what each one asks for.

Questions and answers

How fast is Kentucky sales tax registration?

Paper applications process in 5 to 10 business days per the form's instructions, though the department currently warns mailed or faxed forms can take up to three weeks. Online through MyTaxes is what the department itself calls the faster route, though it publishes no specific figure for it.

Is there a fee?

No. Kentucky publishes no registration fee and the application carries no payment line.

When do remote sellers have to register?

At 200 or more sales into Kentucky or $100,000 or more in gross receipts from sales into the state, measured on the previous or current calendar year. Kentucky is also a Streamlined Sales Tax member, so a multi-state Streamlined registration can cover it.

Do I register through Kentucky One Stop?

Not for the tax account. Sales and use tax registration moved to MyTaxes at mytaxes.ky.gov in March 2025. One Stop remains the Secretary of State side of starting a business, and its tax page still describes the older paper process.

What do you need from me to start?

The legal name and FEIN, entity type, ownership details, what you sell and how, Kentucky locations if any, and the date taxable activity begins. Kentucky's application asks more activity questions than most states, and our intake collects exactly what its form asks.
