Utah · Sales tax registration

Utah sales tax registration, done for you.

Utah moved its remote seller line in 2025 and most guides have not caught up: since July 1, 2025 only revenue counts, more than $100,000 into Utah in the previous or current calendar year, and the old 200-transaction test is gone. Registration itself runs through the Taxpayer Access Point, where the filing status you are assigned comes from your own sales estimate, so the estimate is worth getting right.

Utah State Tax Commission, sales tax registration

State fee. $0. Utah publishes no fee for a sales and use tax license anywhere in its registration guidance, and the application carries no payment step.

Our fee. $180 per state, flat. State fees are passed through at cost.

When you have to register

A seller with a Utah presence registers before making taxable sales. A remote seller must collect and pay Utah sales tax once gross revenue from sales into Utah of tangible personal property, electronically transferred products, or services exceeds $100,000 in the previous or current calendar year. The Tax Commission's own note: before July 1, 2025 there was also a 200-transaction test, and it is gone, so transaction count alone no longer creates the obligation for sales on or after that date.

What comes next

The exit is Form TC-69C, Notice of Change for a Tax Account, which also handles ownership, name, and location changes. Two Utah-specific rules to plan around from the start: while the account is open, a period with no sales still requires a zero return, and if the business is sold, Utah law requires final tax returns within 30 days of the sale. Tax licenses are not transferable to a buyer.

How long it takes

Utah publishes no processing time. Its own FAQ says only that the tax license information arrives by email after the TAP application, and that a mailed PIN letter follows for portal access. When an account number is needed by a date, the email delivery is the step that decides it.

What we do

We work out which accounts you need, submit each registration, and hand you the account numbers, rates, and deposit schedules your payroll system asks for. One flat price per state, and any state fee passed through at cost. You keep the client. We never email them.

Since July 1, 2025 Utah's remote seller threshold is revenue only, more than $100,000 in the previous or current calendar year, so a high-volume seller under that figure may not need this registration at all. We say so before you pay for one.

What makes Utah harder than average

  • The threshold changed recently and half the internet is wrong about it. Utah removed its 200-transaction nexus test effective July 1, 2025, leaving the $100,000 revenue test alone. Guides written before then tell low-revenue, high-volume sellers to register when Utah no longer asks them to.
  • Your own estimate sets your filing schedule. New businesses estimate their sales and use tax liability when applying, and the Tax Commission assigns the filing status from it: $50,000 or less files quarterly, $50,001 to $96,000 monthly, and $96,001 or more monthly with mandatory electronic payments. The commission reviews accounts annually and reassigns in writing.
  • A late-payment history follows the owners, not just the entity. Utah's FAQ warns that if listed owners, partners, officers, members, or trustees have a history of paying sales tax late, outstanding liabilities must be paid and a surety bond may be required before a new sales tax license is issued.
  • Grocery food is its own tax line. Utah taxes grocery food at a separate, lower state rate with its own rate code, so a seller with mixed food and general sales collects at two different state rates from day one.
  • Returns are electronic, full stop. Sales and related tax returns must be filed electronically through TAP, so the registration is also the signup for how every future return gets filed.

How Utah compares

If Utah is one of several states on the list, the order you register in changes what each one asks for.

Questions and answers

What is Utah's remote seller threshold?

More than $100,000 in gross revenue from sales into Utah in the previous or current calendar year. The old 200-transaction test was removed for sales on or after July 1, 2025, so transaction count alone no longer triggers registration.

Is there a fee?

No. Utah publishes no fee for the sales and use tax license and the application has no payment step.

How fast is it?

Utah publishes no figure. The license information arrives by email after the TAP application, and a mailed PIN letter follows for full portal access.

How often will I have to file?

Utah assigns it from the sales estimate on your application: $50,000 a year or less files quarterly, $50,001 to $96,000 files monthly, and $96,001 or more files monthly with mandatory electronic payments. The commission reviews the assignment annually.

What do you need from me to start?

The legal name and FEIN, entity type, owner details, what you sell including whether any of it is grocery food, Utah locations if any, and a realistic annual sales estimate, because Utah assigns your filing schedule from it.
