Nevada · Sales tax registration
Nevada sales tax registration, done for you.
Nevada is fast on paper and gated in practice. The Department of Taxation says an online application returns the permit ID within 24 hours, but the permit is not issued until the fee and any required security deposit are submitted, and the deposit is computed from your estimated sales at the highest tax rate in the state. Getting the estimate right the first time is most of the work.

State fee. $15 per in-state business location, and a business with no physical Nevada location still pays a minimum $15. On top of that sits the security deposit where required: the department computes estimated monthly liability at 8.375 percent, the highest rate in the state, and requires security of three times that for monthly filers or six times for quarterly filers. No deposit is required when the computed amount is $1,000 or less, and there is no maximum.
Our fee. $180 per state, flat. State fees are passed through at cost.
When you have to register
Every retailer selling tangible personal property that will be stored, used, or consumed in Nevada must hold the permit under NRS 372.220. Remote sellers must register once sales exceed $100,000 or 200 separate transactions in Nevada during the previous or current calendar year, and the department requires registration by the first day of the month at least 30 days after exceeding the threshold.
What comes next
Closure runs through My Nevada Tax or the Close Account Form (REV-F020), which is also how a cash security deposit or credit gets refunded, so keep the deposit paperwork. If the business also has employees, the Modified Business Tax account does not close with the sales tax account: the department will not close it until the Employment Security Division closes the unemployment account first.
How long it takes
Published, and unusually specific: the permit ID arrives within 24 hours when applying online, and the department says to allow several weeks for the paper Nevada Business Registration form, longer if payment does not arrive with it.
What we do
We work out which accounts you need, submit each registration, and hand you the account numbers, rates, and deposit schedules your payroll system asks for. One flat price per state, and any state fee passed through at cost. You keep the client. We never email them.
Nevada will not issue the permit until the $15 per-location fee and any required security deposit are submitted, and the deposit is computed from your estimated monthly taxable sales, so that estimate is the number to get right before anything is filed.
What makes Nevada harder than average
- The permit is held hostage to the security deposit. The registration form states a permit will not be issued until applicable security is submitted, the calculation uses the statewide maximum rate whatever your county charges, there is no cap, and the waiver requires three full years of perfect reporting. For corporations, the waiver also takes personal guarantees from two officers.
- Three registrations in a fixed order. The federal EIN comes first, the Secretary of State's state business license second (through the Nevada Orion portal, which replaced SilverFlume), and only then the tax permit. The tax registration cannot jump the queue.
- Remote sellers pay for a location they do not have. The $15 permit fee is per Nevada location, and a business with no Nevada location still pays the $15 minimum.
- Owner Social Security numbers are effectively mandatory. The department's own FAQ says that without the requested owner details, including SSNs, it may not complete the registration. Our intake handles those fields encrypted, and they never travel by email.
- The old portal names still float around. My Nevada Tax replaced the Nevada Tax Center, and old Tax Center logins did not carry over, so guidance that names the old portal quietly strands you at a login that does not exist.
How Nevada compares
If Nevada is one of several states on the list, the order you register in changes what each one asks for.
Questions and answers
How fast is Nevada sales tax registration?
The department publishes 24 hours for the permit ID on an online application, one of the fastest published figures anywhere. Paper takes several weeks, longer if payment is missing.
What does it cost?
$15 per Nevada location, with a $15 minimum even with no Nevada location, plus a security deposit when the department's calculation of your estimated liability exceeds $1,000. The fee and any deposit are state charges passed through at cost.
What is the security deposit about?
Nevada requires security from permit holders under NRS 372.510: three times estimated monthly tax liability for monthly filers, six times for quarterly, computed at the state's highest rate of 8.375 percent. Under $1,000 computed, no deposit. After three years of perfect reporting you can apply for a waiver.
When do remote sellers have to register?
Once Nevada sales exceed $100,000 or 200 separate transactions in the previous or current calendar year, with registration due by the first day of the month at least 30 days after crossing the threshold.
What do you need from me to start?
The legal name and FEIN, the Nevada state business license (or we sequence that first), owner details, what you sell, Nevada locations if any, and a realistic estimate of monthly Nevada sales, because that estimate drives the security deposit calculation.
