Minnesota · Sales tax registration
Minnesota sales tax registration, done for you.
Registering is fast in Minnesota. The decision worth making carefully is who holds the e-Services access, because only an e-Services Master for the business can later close the business and all of its tax accounts. That is a wind-down problem you create at registration.

When you have to register
Register before making taxable sales in Minnesota. If you are also hiring, register with Revenue first, because the unemployment insurance application asks for the Department of Revenue taxpayer ID.
What comes next
Not applicable to a registration, and this is the part to plan for. Minnesota asks that accounts be closed at the end of a filing cycle rather than mid-period, outstanding returns still have to be filed, and only an e-Services Master can close the business and all its accounts.
How long it takes
Minnesota issues account numbers immediately on completing an online registration, which makes it one of the faster states, provided the details are ready before you start.
What we do
We work out exactly which accounts you need, prepare and submit each registration, and hand you the account numbers, rates, and deposit schedules your payroll system asks for. One flat price per account, and any state fee passed through at cost.
What makes Minnesota harder than average
- Access at registration decides who can close later. Only an e-Services Master for the business can close the business and all of its tax accounts. If that person leaves, sorting out access becomes the first task of a wind-down rather than an afterthought.
- Closures are timed to the filing cycle. Minnesota asks you to close at the end of an annual, quarterly, or monthly cycle rather than partway through, so the decision to stop does not translate into an immediate closure.
- Closing the business is broader than closing one account. Those are different actions with very different scope, and the wording does not make that obvious.
- Speed depends on preparation. The number issues immediately online, but only if you already have the legal entity name exactly as registered with the Secretary of State, any trading name, the addresses, and the FEIN.
Questions and answers
How fast is Minnesota registration?
The account number issues immediately after completing the online registration, provided you have the required details ready. It is one of the faster states.
Who should hold the e-Services access?
Someone who will still be with the business at the end of it. Only an e-Services Master can close the business and all its tax accounts, so this quietly determines how easy your eventual wind-down is.
Do I register with Revenue or Employment first?
Revenue first if you also need payroll accounts, because the unemployment insurance application asks for the Department of Revenue taxpayer ID.
Is there a fee?
No. Minnesota does not charge to register a sales and use tax account.
What do you need from me to start?
The legal entity name exactly as registered with the Secretary of State, any doing-business-as name, physical and mailing addresses, the FEIN, what you sell, and who will hold e-Services access.
