Massachusetts · Sales tax registration
Massachusetts sales tax registration, done for you.
Massachusetts registers through MassTaxConnect, and the registration types are more granular than most states. Sales, sales on services, meals, and room occupancy are separate registrations, which matters because each one you open is one you have to identify and cancel individually when you stop.
Who you are dealing with
Massachusetts Department of Revenue
- Handles:
- Sales tax, sales on services, meals, room occupancy, and withholding registrations
- System:
- MassTaxConnect
- Form:
- Register the business in MassTaxConnect. Cancellations later run through the same system, or on Form AI-1, which lists each registration type separately
State fee. $0 to register. Our flat fee covers preparing and filing the registration.
When you have to register
Register before making taxable sales. A restaurant or a hotel needs to think in terms of which registration types apply rather than assuming one sales registration covers the activity.
What comes next
Not applicable to a registration. Worth knowing now: Form AI-1 carries separate checkboxes for withholding, sales, sales on services, room occupancy, and meals, so whatever you open here you identify individually at the end.
How long it takes
Massachusetts does not publish a turnaround we could confirm. MassTaxConnect leaves you an immediate record, which the paper route does not.
What we do
We work out exactly which accounts you need, prepare and submit each registration, and hand you the account numbers, rates, and deposit schedules your payroll system asks for. One flat price per account, and any state fee passed through at cost.
What makes Massachusetts harder than average
- The registration types are granular. Sales, sales on services, meals, and room occupancy are treated separately. A business that thinks of itself as simply making sales can hold three of them without realising.
- Every registration is a separate cancellation. Form AI-1 lists them individually, and cancelling one does nothing to the others. The number you open is the number you close.
- An open unemployment account costs money here, if you also hire. Massachusetts states that an open unemployment account continues to generate reporting obligations and fees after your last employee leaves. That is a Massachusetts-specific reason to keep registrations tight.
- The unemployment portal says suspend, not close. If you do hire, the DUA action is Suspend Employer Account. Looking for a Close option and not finding one is why people abandon it half done.
Questions and answers
How many Massachusetts registrations might I need?
It depends what you sell. Sales, sales on services, meals, and room occupancy are separate registration types. A restaurant or a hotel commonly needs more than one.
Is there a fee to register?
No. Massachusetts does not charge to register these accounts.
How do I cancel later?
In MassTaxConnect, or by ticking the final box on a return, or on Form AI-1, which lists each registration type separately. Each one has to be identified individually.
Does this affect anything if I also have employees?
Yes, and it is worth knowing early. Massachusetts states that an open unemployment account continues to generate reporting obligations and fees after your last employee is gone, so keeping registrations tight has a direct cost benefit.
What do you need from me to start?
The legal name and FEIN, entity type, Massachusetts locations, exactly what you sell so the right registration types are opened, and the date taxable sales begin.
