Pennsylvania · Sales tax closure
Close a Pennsylvania sales tax account.
Pennsylvania uses one cancellation form and one portal for several different tax types, which makes closing a sales tax account simple to start and easy to get wrong. The Department of Revenue asks you to confirm every liability and filing requirement is met before anything is cancelled.

State fee. $0. Pennsylvania does not charge to cancel a sales tax account. Outstanding tax, interest, and penalty are a separate matter and still have to be settled.
When you have to close
You cancel when you stop making taxable sales in Pennsylvania, which covers closing the business, selling it, or ending Pennsylvania sales while continuing elsewhere. If the corporation is being dissolved as well, that is a separate process with its own steps, and cancelling the sales tax account does not accomplish it.
Final returns come first
Outstanding returns have to be filed before the account will close cleanly. The Department of Revenue's guidance is to confirm all liabilities and filing requirements are satisfied first, so a business that stopped filing when it stopped selling has to file its way current before the cancellation goes through.
How long it takes
Pennsylvania does not publish a processing time for cancelling a sales tax account. The Department of Revenue asks that you contact the Customer Experience Center to confirm all liabilities and filing requirements are met before closing, which is the step that actually sets the pace.
What we do
We confirm which accounts are open, file the final returns if they are still outstanding, submit the cancellation to each agency, and follow up until both are confirmed closed. You get the written confirmations. One flat price, and the state charges nothing to close.
What makes Pennsylvania harder than average
- One form covers several tax types. REV-1706 is used for state and local sales and use tax, employer withholding, and other taxes and fees, so it is easy to cancel one account believing you cancelled all of them. If you had both a sales account and a withholding account, both have to be identified.
- Cancelling the account does not dissolve the entity. If the corporation is closing too, that carries its own separate steps. A cancelled tax account and a closed company are different things, and only one of them stops the entity level obligations.
- You are asked to confirm compliance before you cancel, not after. The Department of Revenue points you to the Customer Experience Center to check that liabilities and filing requirements are met first, which means a lapsed account has homework before it has a closure.
- The federal identification number is a trap. If the IRS changed your FEIN, Pennsylvania treats that as a new registration on a PA-100 rather than a change to the existing account, so what looks like an update is actually a close and a re-register.
Questions and answers
Can I close my Pennsylvania sales tax account online?
Yes. In myPATH you can find the account on the Summary tab and use Account Maintenance, or the Cancel Account link on the account panel directly. REV-1706 is the paper route if you would rather file the form.
Do I need to file outstanding returns first?
Yes. The Department of Revenue asks that all liabilities and filing requirements be met before the account is cancelled. Filing what is missing is usually the longer half of the job and the cancellation is the short part at the end.
I am closing my corporation too. Does this handle that?
No. Cancelling the sales tax account closes the tax account only. Dissolving the corporation is a separate process with its own requirements, and leaving it undone leaves entity level obligations running.
I also have a Pennsylvania payroll account. Does this close that?
Not by itself. REV-1706 covers several tax types, but each account has to be identified. The unemployment side is a different department entirely and needs a UC-2B with Labor and Industry.
What do you need from me to start?
The legal name and FEIN, the Pennsylvania sales tax license number, the date you stopped making taxable sales, and which returns you believe are outstanding. Tell us if you also hold a withholding or UC account and we will handle them together.
