Pennsylvania · Sales tax registration

Pennsylvania sales tax licence, done for you.

Pennsylvania registers through the Pennsylvania Online Business Tax Registration in myPATH. Two things catch people: the tax reaches digital products as well as tangible goods, and if you run shows or markets there is a separate Promoter Licence with its own 30 day lead time.

Agency source

State fee. $0 to register the sales tax licence. Our flat fee covers preparing and filing the registration.

When you have to register

The tax is imposed on the retail sale, consumption, rental or use of tangible personal property including digital products in Pennsylvania, and on certain services relating to such property. If you promote shows, you need a Promoter Licence and must register at least 30 days prior to the opening of the first show.

What comes next

Not applicable to a registration. Worth knowing now: closing later uses REV-1706 or the Cancel Account action in myPATH, the same form covers several tax types, and the Department of Revenue asks you to confirm all liabilities and filing requirements are met before cancelling.

How long it takes

Pennsylvania does not publish a turnaround for the sales tax registration that we could confirm. It does publish a lead time for promoters, which is 30 days before the first show, and that is the number to plan around if it applies to you.

What we do

We work out exactly which accounts you need, prepare and submit each registration, and hand you the account numbers, rates, and deposit schedules your payroll system asks for. One flat price per account, and any state fee passed through at cost.

What makes Pennsylvania harder than average

  • Digital products are in the tax base. Pennsylvania taxes the sale, rental or use of tangible personal property including digital products, which catches businesses that think of themselves as selling only downloads or subscriptions.
  • Promoters need a separate licence, 30 days ahead. Anyone who rents or operates a show for the display or sale of taxable property needs a Promoter Licence and must register at least 30 days before the first show opens. A promoter has no filing obligation with Revenue but does have to renew the licence annually.
  • One cancellation form covers several tax types. REV-1706 handles sales and use, employer withholding, and others, so at the end you have to identify which account you are actually closing.
  • Compliance is confirmed before cancellation, not after. The Department of Revenue asks you to check that liabilities and filing requirements are met first, which means a lapsed account has homework before it has a closure.
